Accurate testing is the foundation of effective treatment. At Campbelltown Heart & Rhythm Centre, we use state-of-the-art diagnostic tools to understand your heart’s rhythm and function, so we can tailor the best care for you.
An echocardiogram ( Echo) is an ultrasound of your heart. The ultrasound provides images of the heart to assess the areas of the heart which are not functioning or may be blocked or diseased. The test involves placement of electrodes to your chest, arms and legs. The test typically takes 3-5 mins.
A Holter monitor is a battery-operated portable device that monitors your heart rhythm. It can be worn between 24-48 hours. The monitor is the size of a phone and there are electrodes attached to your chest. During the recording you will need to monitor your symptoms and record the time they occur and what were you doing in the diary sheet provided. It is important to continue your usual daily activities but you must not get the monitor wet (no swimming or showering). Remember to wear loose fitting shirt or top as the technician will need to access the chest area.
An exercise stress test measures your heart function whilst under the strain of exercise such as walking on a treadmill. The treadmill will increase in speed and slope while your heart rate, blood pressure and electrocardiogram (ECG) is continually monitored. The test can take 30 minutes and is conducted in the clinic with a cardiologist and technician.
A “stress echo” compares how your heart functions before and after exercise. The cardiac sonographer will take images of your heart at rest. Then you will be attached to an ECG monitor and complete exercises on a treadmill which can increase in speed and incline. During the test you will be monitored by the team at Campbelltown Heart and Rhythm centre and the test will take approximately 40mins.
Following the placement of a Pacemaker or Defibrillator implanted, it will need to be monitored at regular intervals of 6 or 12 months. At Campbelltown Heart and Rhythm centre our doctors can implant your devices and provide follow-up care in clinic. At the check appointments the doctors will check if your device is functioning well and the battery is still working. Batteries on these implants may require replacement over the years so follow-up appointments are important to ensure the device is functioning correctly.
